For example, Roman explains there is demonic imagery throughout the first two episodes, which lends credence to his theory that Mephisto will emerge as the MCU’s next big villain. First, Vision sings “Yakkity Yak” to distract his boss during a dinner party; the yak is a kind of goat, an animal often associated with the Devil. In the second episode, it is a piece of “Big Red” gum that wreaks havoc with Vision’s inner system.

And then there are the commercial breaks, which intersperse the storyline with period-appropriate advertisements. In episode 1, we see an ad for the Stark Tech toaster oven. This is one of the first instances of a Pleasantville-esque incursion of color into this monochromatic world, with its blinking red light—a possible allusion to the Stark Industries explosives that destroyed Wanda’s childhood home in Sokovia.

Similarly, the commercial in episode 2 advertises the “Strucker” men’s wristwatch: Strucker was the villain who used one of the Infinity Stones to bestow Wanda and her brother with their superhuman powers and forced them to be his operatives. It definitely appears that the ad breaks in each episode are reflections of Wanda’s life story, suggesting that all of this is being projected or dreamed into existence from her subconscious. Then again, only two episodes have aired and we still have next to no idea what is going on in this seemingly perfect suburban world.
