The University of Vermont men’s basketball team will play in a multi-team event called “Bubbleville” at Mohegan Sun, the school’s athletic department said on Friday afternoon.
The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Gazelle Group made the announcement earlier Friday. Mohegan Sun is located in Uncasville, Connecticut.
As part of their nonconference schedule, the Catamounts will play Buffalo on Nov. 30, St. Bonaventure on Dec. 1 and Iona on Dec. 2.
“The scheduling landscape in college basketball has been more challenging that it’s ever been,” UVM coach John Becker said in a statement. “This is a great opportunity for us to play three quality opponents in a safe environment.”
According to a news release, “Bubbleville will house several events relocated and reimagined due to COVID-19 and provides a controlled environment with teams and event staff adhering to tribal, government, and NCAA health and safety protocols and testing requirements.”
More details, including game times and broadcast information, will be released at a later date.
Earlier this month, America East announced return to competition update for its fall and winter sports. The 18-game conference seasons for men’s and women’s basketball are slated to begin Dec. 19-20.
A recent blanket waiver by the NCAA will allow men’s hoops teams to play up to two multiple-team events as long as they do not exceed 27 regular-season contests.
Last season, UVM also participated in the Hall of Fame Tip-Off Tournament. The Cats beat St. John’s and lost to No. 7 Virginia in a pair of campus-site games before splitting contests vs. Central Connecticut State and Rider at Mohegan Sun.
Returning star guard Stef Smith was an all-tournament team pick, averaging 18.7 points over the four games.
