Rapper T.I. is in a good mood when Men’s Health stops by his home. He’s been working on a lot of things during the pandemic (his new song “Ring” with Young Thug is out now), and he’s about to turn 40 years old. In that time, he’s started to look at some health-related things differently: both the way he approaches his diet, and the way he thinks about working out at the gym have changed.

The rapper/actor tries to get a workout in at his home gym anywhere from 3 to 5 days a week. While the actual routine varies (his preferred exercises are chest presses and dumbbells), his fitness goals are all about trying to stay as young as possible.

“I’m turning 40 this year,” he tells the camera with a laugh. “Just because you’re over 40 don’t mean you gotta look like it.”

With that in mind, he’s all about trying a variety of workouts, whether it be biking or boxing. All the exercises help him stay motivated and prepare for performing. T.I. does acknowledge that working out helps with breathing and maintaining stamina under the concert lights. But he does have a very funny idea for why working out helps him out so much in music.

“It helps tremendously when you take your shirt off at that part of the show—it helps a lot with that,” he jokes. “I think as you get older, if you don’t use it, you lose it.”

After getting a good workout session in, it’s a trip to the kitchen for T.I. He likes to keep a ton of produce in the fridge for meals and snacks (he loves having pineapples, strawberries, and berries at all times), and he keeps some tea and apple juice on hand for his youngest daughter to drink. But T.I.’s fridge didn’t always look like this—he’s entirely changed the type of protein he puts into his body.

“I stopped eating red meat, stopped eating chicken,” he tells the camera. “Actually, I became pescatarian back in 2016… I try to keep it mainly fish, dover sole, salmon, branzino, red snapper.”

It’s a very different approach to food than ten years ago, when the rapper would find himself eating a lot of steak, beer and fried food. But with age comes wisdom, as he discovered with the overhaul to his diet.

“I really didn’t have a regimen, you know what I mean?” he tells the camera. I wasn’t very disciplined as an eater. And then after you hit 34, you start noticing changes in your metabolism and changes on how you operate throughout the day. So you make adjustments based on other people who’ve gotten old before you and their advice.”
