House Democrats are planning legislation to form a commission to review a president’s health and fitness for office. President Trump continues to be treated for the coronavirus. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi hosted a Capitol event and said Congress has a duty to preserve the integrity of the nation’s democracy.
She insisted it’s not about President Trump and said voters will soon decide his fate. Earlier this week, Pelosi accused Trump of being in an “altered state” and of displaying a “disassociation from reality” since he returned from three days of hospitalization.
Pelosi was pressed on the timing of the legislation, shortly before the election. She said moving legislation takes time and insisted that it’s not about the election.
Republicans have accused Dems of trying to weaponize the 25th Amendment to the Constitution, right before the election. The 25th Amendment is a vehicle for temporarily removing a president if he-or-she is deemed to be unable to perform the duties of the office. The vice president would then take over.
