The thyroid gland is located at the front of the neck. It is a butterfly-shaped gland that consists of two lobes. A normal thyroid gland is not visible, nor can be felt with a finger when pressure is applied on the neck. The thyroid gland produces hormones that regulate the body’s metabolic rate, heart and muscle function, digestive system, brain development, and bone maintenance. However, an imbalance in the production of the hormone can occur, which can cause hypothyroidism (less release of hormone), or hyperthyroidism (more release of hormone). These can cause further complications.

Hypothyroidism is a condition where your thyroid gland doesn’t produce enough of certain crucial hormones, or in underactive. Hypothyroidism may not cause noticeable symptoms in the early stages. Fatigue, weakness, constipation, and unexplained weight gain are symptoms of hypothyroidism.
Hyperthyroidism, on the other hand, is when the thyroid gland is over-active. Symptoms of the condition range from unexplained weight loss, extremely high metabolism, and an irregular heart rate.
Both the conditions are harmful to the body, and it is important to manage them to avoid further health risks and complications. One of the best ways to manage thyroid imbalances is through diet.

- Eggs – Whole eggs, that include the yoke as well as the whites are considered healthy for people with hypothyroidism.
- Vegetables – All vegetables are great for people with hypothyroidism, however, they must only consume cruciferous vegetables in moderation
- Fruits – All fruits except oranges, berries, banana, and tomatoes can be consumed by people affected with hypothyroidism.
- Dairy – All dairy products should be consumed by people with hypothyroidism to stay healthy.
Diet for Hyperthyroidism
People who have excess production of the hormone thyroxine should consume a diet rich in the following foods. Since the production of the hormone thyroxine depends on iodine consumption, watching that can also help.
- Non-iodized salt – Table salt usually contains iodine. You must look out for options with zero iodine content to manage your condition.
- Coffee or tea – Coffee or tea, without milk or dairy should be consumed to manage hyperthyroidism.
- Fresh fruits – Fresh fruits can be added to your diet to provide for the right nutrition.
- Vegetables – Vegetables are rich in various nutrients and minerals, and consuming them can help you follow a balanced diet.
