ELMWOOD PARK, NJ – Covid-19 has had a major impact on our minds and bodies. Just ask Hollye Richardson, of Warrior Goddess Fitness in Elmwood Park.
“People are cooped up, frustrated, stressed out and gaining weight,” Richardson said. “We can’t move around and exercise like we used to. People need more accessible ways to relieve stress, keep fit and be healthy.”
We are all experiencing newfound fear, anxiety, change, loss, and a plethora of other challenging emotions. In fact, according to a study done by the CDC, 40% of Americans are struggling with their mental health as a consequence of the pandemic. Additionally, many of us are living less active lifestyles since gyms were closed for so long. People are also spending more time indoors with so much of society still closed. In warm weather, it is easy to get outside, take walks, go on hikes, or bike rides. But, as the winter months quickly approach, our options become limited.
One solution many are turning to is yoga. Yoga benefits both mental and physical health. Did you know:
- 87% of people feel better after a yoga class.
- 94% of yoga practitioners do yoga for wellness-related reasons.
- 40% of US yogis eat healthily because of yoga.
- 54% of US yogis do yoga because it helps them release tension.
- 59% of US yoga practitioners believe that yoga helps them sleep better.
Because Richardson understands the numerous struggles COVID-19 has created, she offers small, in-person classes in her well-sanitized yoga studio, as well as virtual classes. The virtual classes are good for those who are not ready for in-person encounters, as well as for those who may live farther away from the studio.
