Some people forgot their manners and had loads to say about Delevingne’s thin appearance.
High fashion model Cara Delevingne posted a cute and casual mirror selfie in her luxurious closet yesterday, but fans found the photo concerning. It’s 2020, and while this year is admittedly a garbage fire, we learned to not comment on anyone’s weight disparagingly a long time ago. Some people forgot their manners, however, and had loads to say about Delevingne’s thin appearance.
We don’t want to join in on analyzing Delevingne’s weight, but rather notice the toxic nature of the comment section. While social media campaigns have launched to promote all body types, some people forget that others don’t want to be told how skinny they look. In addition to that, just because the model has a thick skin for criticism doesn’t mean she wants it littered throughout her personal platforms.
One commenter said, “She’s really skinny someone please tell me she’s ok,” and another noted, “gain some weight cara. I love you! 😘.” While these comments may have come from a kind place, they’re still body-shaming her. Telling someone to gain weight might sound like you’re caring for them, but outsiders looking in on Delevingne’s life don’t know her health background. Therefore, we should all steer clear of telling her, or anyone else for that matter, what to do about their weight.
The Body Image Police
Other onlookers who noticed the distasteful comments came to Delevingne’s defense. One mused, “Idk why everyone it’s complaining about her weight, it’s just her body composition… if she’s happy and healthy it’s better to save your comments.”
Several people took this moment to compare skinny-shaming to fat-shaming, but we’re not even going to get into that. No shaming at all sounds about right. If it’s not your body, don’t insert your Karen-ish opinion where it doesn’t belong. Telling someone to eat a burger is not funny, and telling someone to stop eating burgers is equally unacceptable.
The fashion icon has not responded to the influx of outraging weight comments. In interviews and other public appearances, she always appears down-to-earth and willing to make jokes about herself. She probably wouldn’t joke about her weight, but if anyone had a right to, it would be her. Because it’s her body, as emphasized numerous times.
